Kinross Khoisan meet with minister McKenzie

The group will meet the minister of Sports, Arts and Culture again in December.

The Khoisan people from the area met Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie at an event in Cape Town on October 19.

McKenzie spoke about the future of the Khoi and San people in SA. According to resident Bruno Kakora, McKenzie said the unity among the Khoisan is crucial.

“He said to preserve the Khoisans’ languages and practices is vital and said that to unite the Khoi, the San and so-called coloured people, a thoughtful and multi-faceted approach is required,” reported Kakora.

Some of the Khoisan people at the meeting in Cape Town: Professor Earl Djehuti, Nazeem Tambay, Bruno Kakora, Zane Matthews and Merle Pithamber.

Some key considerations to implement this strategy include building foundations and establishing a unified forum for leaders to engage in dialogue, identifying common goals, shared interests, concerns and aspirations, developing a shared vision outlining unity and co-operation and fostering relationships through cultural events, workshops and social gatherings.

McKenzie told his audience the Khoi and San must be recognised nationally as the first and original citizens of SA, and their languages must be recognised as official languages and entered into school language curriculums.

The local Khoisan will meet with McKenzie again in Kimberley in December.
