GMM council speaker concerned about the incomplete sewer project in eMbalenhle
The incomplete sewer project is in front of her gate and she often sees people doing laundry or rituals in the water.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality speaker Fikile Magagamela raised her concern about an incomplete sewer project near her home in Ext 24, eMbalenhle.
Magagamela raised her concern during the continuation of the council meeting on December 4 at the municipal council chamber in Secunda.
She said the neglected project is in front of her gate and the council has been talking about the problem, but there is no action.
In the previous council meeting, the Govan Mbeki Municipality mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, told the council that the Gert Sibande District Municipality has taken over the project to upgrade the bulk sewer line and pump station in Ext 24.
Zuma said this step was taken after the municipality terminated a contract with the appointed service provider.
“I am the affected person here because this project is in front of my house gate and I always see many things happening there.
“Some residents do their laundry while others are seen performing rituals. I am appealing to our community to also stop collecting water from that place because I always see people getting water there when there is a water problem in eMbalenhle,” said Magagamela.
Zuma said it is unfortunate because the project is now going to be done by the district Municipality and the GMM’s role is to provide the district with the eMbalenhle sewer master plan.
Zuma said only the district municipality can tell when the project will start as they are the implementing agent. He said the Water and Sanitation Department has allocated a budget of around R1.1b for the eMbalenhle sewer projects.
Some councillors also raised their concern about the water situation of Bethal and eMzinoni. Zuma said they have a challenge of insufficient water supply in Bethal and eMzinoni. Zuma said they have sufficient storage of water in Bethal and eMzinoni.
“The council has resolved to implement a mult- million rand water bulk water pipeline project from Trichardt to Bethal as the solution to the matter.”
