Festive spirit is high at parkrun in Standerton
Motsamayi Radebe ran his 100th parkrun and Eugene Viljoen his 25th run on January 1.
Neither a festive Christmas mood nor the dawn of the new year could stop ardent parkrunners from taking on the 5km parkrun route in Standerton over the festive season.
Many participants dressed in Christmas attire on December 21 showed up for another parkrun on December 28 and 72 participants were again up bright and early on January 1 for the first parkrun of 2025.
Because this was on a Wednesday, the usual Saturday event continued three days later. Motsamayi Radebe ran his 100th parkrun and Eugene Viljoen his 25th run on January 1.
Lucky Luyanda, who crossed the finish line second, set a new personal best time of 23:38.
The youngster Kutloano Tsotsetsi finished in 22:48, followed by Luyanda, then Timothy Hoop (23:42), Eugene Viljoen (25:42), Takura Wippinery (27:10), Timothy Clive (27:19), Joshua Wessels (27:20), Parth Jayram (27:30), Ayanda Dlamini (27:50) and Deon Steynberg (27:55).
Volunteers are the backbone of parkrun; without them, there will be no event. The run directors thanked those who selflessly volunteered their time over the holidays.
The volunteers on New Year’s Day were Renette de Sousa, Preyanka Dorasamy, Lizette Jansen van Rensburg, Séan Jansen van Rensburg, Richard Mabaso, Krishnalal (Johnny) Ramdharee, Marion Jean Robertson, Lydia Roets, Zeldine Strydom, Marjorie Uys, Charl van Wyk, Leandri van Wyk, Elmien Vermaak, Ruwan Vermaak and Johannes Vosloo.
