Department of Human Settlements discusses title deeds in Standerton

Starting in March, these title deeds are to be handed out in batches each Friday at community halls corresponding to the location of the RDP housing.

The Department of Human Settlements gathered in the council chamber on February 27 to discuss the current problems with issuing title deeds to RDP homeowners.

A concern raised in the meeting was title deeds were not recently handed out because the executive mayor, Sifiso Mngemezulu could not attend the ceremony.

The council decided deeds had be handed out regardless of the mayor’s presence and that this should not hinder beneficiaries from receiving what is rightfully theirs.

Those eligible for title deeds will receive notification. Another concern raised during this meeting was title deeds supposed to be issued to deceased owners.

In cases like this, the deceased’s family must request a letter of authority, which is apparently hard to obtain. If family members of deceased RDP homeowners do not have letters of authority, they cannot obtain title deeds.

The council emphasised the difference between beneficiaries and dependents. Though a beneficiary might be entitled to title deeds, a dependent is not necessarily entitled to deeds.

Upon discovery of any fraudulent applications, the applicants may be subject to legal action, including fines.
