SANBS launches #LifeGivas to inspire South Africa’s youth to become blood donors
“We want to ignite a movement that fosters a culture of giving.”
With just under 1% of the population donating blood, SANBS stated it is determined to shift this statistic by empowering a new generation of lifesavers.
SANBS introduced the #LifeGivas Network, a dynamic new campaign to inspire South Africans, aged 16-24, to become active blood donors.
Nesher Private School in Eloff showed their enthusiasm when brothers, Zane and Neil van Onselen, donated blood during the school’s family walk on March 15.
Zane (23) says he has donated blood his whole life. “I was still in school when I first donated blood,” said Zane.
“I believe the #LifeGivas Network campaign is an excellent idea to motivate the younger generation to donate blood.”
According to SANBS, #LifeGivas Network seeks to mobilise schools, universities, and communities, creating a vibrant network of young people actively making a difference.
Schools and universities hosting blood drives until October 31, will have the opportunity to be recognised for their efforts with a live radio outside broadcast, offering them a unique platform to showcase their commitment to this life-saving cause.
According to SANB, social media will play a pivotal role in driving the campaign, with students encouraged to produce compelling videos and challenges to inspire their peers to get involved.
“We want to ignite a movement that fosters a culture of giving,” said Thandi Mosupye, senior manager of marketing, communication, and brand at SANBS.

“The #LifeGivas Network is not just a campaign; it is a call to action for young people to become heroes through the impactful act of donating blood. By inspiring the youth, we aim to build a lasting culture of giving that will benefit our healthcare system for generations,” Mosupye added.
As part of the campaign, SANBS invite schools to participate in a creative challenge. Schools can showcase their talent by performing a dance routine, skit, song, or war cry to encourage regular blood donations among the youth.
Winners of the live radio outside broadcast will be selected based on the number of blood pledges, blood drives hosted, new donors recruited, social media engagement, and the creativity of their war cry or video.
To participate, visit www.sanbs.org.za for more information or use the Book a Blood Drive feature at https://sanbs.org.za/book-a-blood-drive-form to organise a blood drive at your school or university.
