Police confiscate cellphones, dagga at schools in Leandra

The police and community partners worked together to improve discipline in schools.

The Leandra SAPS, the CPF and Community Public Work officers randomly searched two secondary schools in Leandra, the Chief Ampie Mayisa and Vukuqhakaze secondary schools, on May 28.

According to Leandra SAPS spokesperson Constable Nontobeko Ngubeni, the search aimed to promote safety and discipline at schools.

Ngubeni said they identified problematic classrooms during the search and focused on them.

“More than 80 cellphones were confiscated from learners, and dagga was found abandoned in a bathroom. The principals of both schools appreciated the initiative and confirmed that learners signed a code of conduct agreeing not to bring cellphones to school,” said Ngubeni.

He said SAPS would launch an awareness campaign to address cyberbullying and explain why learners are prohibited from bringing cellphones to school.
