Man from Standerton gets life imprisonment for murder of GBV activist

Mbali Mokgawa helped abused women find safety, then became a victim herself.

The High Court in Breyton sentenced Anthony Michael Mazibuko (49) to life imprisonment for murder on May 28.
Mazibuko, a resident of Ext 6, murdered Mbali Nelly Mokgawa on May 24 last year.

The communications officer of Standerton Police, Captain Braam Robberts, said: “The deceased was at her house, which she shared with the accused, when she received a call from the father of her two children.

“This sparked an intense argument between Mokgawa and Mazibuko, which escalated into physical violence and ultimately led to her murder.”

Mokgawa’s bloodstained body was found the next morning with multiple fatal injuries. Her eyes were swollen, her face badly bruised, and she had a burn wound on her arm.

According to police, scars on her back, arms, and hands indicated she had fought back against Mazibuko. Mokgawa’s loved ones said she was passionate about women’s rights and an advocate for survivors of gender-based violence.

She dedicated her life to the Victim Empowerment Centre, where she helped many abused women recover.
