Bronkies’ young golf sensation invited to World Junior Championships in USA
Just days after his 11th birthday, Vezukuhle Ngcobo won the Africa Junior Golf Championship in Botswana.
Winning the Africa Junior Golf Championship in Botswana in April opened international doors for Vezukuhle Ngcobo, a young golf sensation from Bronkhorstspruit.
Just days after his 11th birthday, Vezu defeated older, often more physically imposing competitors, proving that talent and determination can overcome age.
“They might be older and bigger, but people notice when Vezu steps onto the green – he has a presence,” said his father and manager, Nathi Ngcobo.
A scratch handicapper, Vezu has quickly gained recognition for his calm demeanour, humble attitude and remarkable skills, especially his short game.
“He might not hit as far or as hard as the older boys, but his strength is in his chipping and putting.”
Nathi, a former scratch golfer, describes his son as exceptionally focused and self-disciplined.
“His routine is impressive. He’s up by 05:00 for physical training and practices four times a week at the Pretoria Country Club,” Nathi said.
Vezu trains under Andy Shackleton, a former Sunshine Tour player, and is homeschooled to accommodate his demanding schedule.
Vezu’s golfing journey began by accident. At four, he found his father’s stored clubs and broke a window while playing with them.
“My wife, Busi, suggested I take him to the course to hit a few balls. I thought he’d lose interest, but he kept going. The next morning, he asked to go again. That’s when I knew there was something special,” Nathi recalled.

Others saw it too. Pastor James from their Kingdom Life Church gave Vezu his first set of clubs, and local golfer Eric Mashego took him on his first round.
Since then, his rise has been steady and impressive. He is ranked number one in Gauteng’s U13 category and will move into the U15 division in 2026.
Though he’s played alongside high-profile figures like President Cyril Ramaphosa, Vezu dreams of meeting his golfing idol, Ernie Els.
Off the course, he enjoys soccer and music. He’s especially close to his 15-year-old sister, Vele, and is known for being grounded and family-oriented.

Vezu’s name, meaning God has shown us something good, feels prophetic. A devout Christian, he credits his success to faith, viewing each step in his golf journey as a blessing.
His next milestone? The World Junior Golf Championship in Las Vegas in July. His father believes it’s just the beginning.
“We’re waiting until he turns 14. If he’s still this passionate, it’ll be all systems go toward a professional career,” said Nathi.
From accidentally breaking a window to breaking boundaries in junior golf, Vezu Ngcobo is a name to watch, not just in SA but on the global stage.
