Double amputee from Modder East Orchards needs prosthetics
A quotation for basic, entry-level legs is almost R63 000, but the more flexibility in the ankle and the more features that are added, the more expensive it will be.
With about 400 state patients before him in the queue for prosthetic legs, Johan Mulder is now looking at alternative means to get back on his feet – literally.
This 34-year-old boilermaker from Modder East Orchards lost both legs on March 1 when a tractor and slasher ran over him.
The injuries to his legs were so severe that amputation was the only option. Despite several setbacks, Mulder left the hospital in good spirits and returned to work.
He was scheduled for measurements for prosthetics almost two months ago and was looking forward to adapting to this new way of life, but he was bitterly disappointed.
“Because of a huge backlog, I was not even measured. I was told there was no material in stock to build prosthetics. With more than 400 legs on the waiting list to be built before mine, and without knowing how much material will be supplied, there is no indication of how long I will have to wait for legs,” explained Mulder.

Going the private patient route seems to be the fastest way for Mulder to get prosthetic legs, but it is also expensive.
A quotation for basic, entry-level legs is almost R63 000. However, the more flexibility in the ankle and the more features that are added, the more expensive it will be.
This quotation was obtained from an orthotist in Boksburg, willing to help Mulder by not charging for labour and manufacturing, rehabilitation sessions with a physiotherapist, or consultation fees.
He described Mulder as a strong, energetic, active individual who is passionate about regaining the ability to walk and be independent again.
A BackaBuddy campaign was launched after Mulder’s accident to help with the medical costs. Anyone who wants to help Mulder get legs can donate. For more information, contact Mulder at 073 177 1690 or his wife, Chantelle, at 072 707 5494.
