The Executive Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Nhlakanipho Zuma, accompanied by members of the mayoral committee, municipal officials and ward councillors, conducted site inspections on July 16 to assess progress on major infrastructure projects in eMzinoni.

One of the main sites visited was Victor Khayiyane Street, currently undergoing resurfacing as part of a R15 million road rehabilitation programme.

According to MMC for Civil Engineering, Vusimuzi Mbokazi, the programme aims to improve road quality, enhance safety and ease traffic flow in eMzinoni, Secunda and Trichardt.

The delegation also visited the eMzinoni Multi-Purpose Centre, which is being refurbished after falling victim to vandalism. The restoration is funded by Thungela Isibonelo Colliery through its Social and Labour Plan.

MMC for Planning and Economic Development, Thandi Ngxonono, acknowledged that the project experienced delays due to funding constraints and repeated vandalism. However, work has since resumed, and a contractor is already on site.

The municipality highlighted that the refurbishment would create job opportunities for local residents, especially in Wards 22 and 23, and contribute to socio-economic development in the area.

Notably, the multi-purpose centre had not yet been operational when it was vandalised, raising public concern over the millions already spent on its construction.
