Learners enjoy event at Graceland in Secunda
Beneficiaries of programme address learners at event.
Learners from various high schools in the Govan Mbeki municipal area attended the recent Aspire Achievers event at Graceland Hotel Casino & Country Club.
The Southern Highveld Community Development Trust (SHCDT), a community social investment initiative of Graceland, organised the event, which was attended by 500 learners.
The event aimed to encourage high school learners to explore new opportunities, consider study and career options, and thrust themselves beyond their comfort zones.
The SHCDT has provided nearly 150 all-expenses-paid scholarships to local students since it launched its hands-on bursary programme in 2001.
Learners who attended the Aspire Achievers event came from Alpheus D Nkosi Secondary School, Ikhethelo Secondary School and eMzinoni Secondary School in Bethal; Chief Ampie Mayisa Secondary School and Vukuqhakaze Secondary School in Leandra; Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School, Kiriyatswane Secondary School, KI Twala Secondary School, Sizwakele Secondary School and Kusasalethu Secondary School in eMbalenhle; and Osizweni Secondary School near Evander.

Current bursary recipients shared their success stories to inspire the learners. Mlungisi Mazibuko, a 2023 chemical engineering graduate now employed at Sasol, was one of the beneficiaries who shared his story.
According to SHCDT manager Thomas Masango, the Aspire Achievers programme also provides valuable networking opportunities for learners.
“Additionally, these workshops contribute to a positive school culture by promoting a growth mindset and a focus on personal development,” said Masango.
“When learners see their peers and role models achieving through dedication and effort, it creates a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to aim high and work towards their dreams.”
Graceland’s staff showcased a range of career paths – from finance and technology to food and beverage – giving learners insight into opportunities at the resort and casino.
