Water levels continue to drop in Mpumalanga

Water levels in Mpumalanga continue to drop, with onl two listed dams in the Gert Sibande district showing improvements.

The Department of Water and Sanitation released their weekly state of reservoirs report on August 14, detailing the current dam levels across Mpumalanga.

The average dam levels in Mpumalanga dropped from 98.3% to 98.2%. The Gert Sibande District Average dropped from 99.0% to 98.5%.

In the district, only Morgenstond Dam remained unchanged at 100.1%. Two dams in the district recorded improvements, including Nooitgedacht Dam fro 100.0% to 100.3%.

Vygeboom Dam increased from 100.1% to 100.4%. Grootdraai Dam dropped from 99.4% to 98.6%. Jericho Dam dropped from 96.8% to 95.2% and Westoe Dam from 83.5% to 81.9%.

Heyshope Dam dipped from 100.3% to 100.2%. Wisane Mavasa, spokesperson for the DWS, stated that South Africa is amongst the 30 driest countries in the world.

“Water conservation remains crucial to ensuring reliable water supply to all citizens and water security for current and future generations,” said Mavasa.
