Govan Mbeki Municipality hosts annual Speaker’s Youth Mock Council

The office of the Speaker of Govan Mbeki Municipality hosted its annual Learners’ Mock Council Meeting at the municipal council chamber on August 21.
Learners from various primary and secondary schools within the municipality had the exciting opportunity to step into the shoes of local leaders during the 3rd Annual Speaker’s Youth Mock Council.
According to Fikile Magagamela, the council speaker, the programme aims to foster leadership skills, critical thinking, and civic engagement among young people.
She praised the collaboration between the municipality and educators, highlighting its role in empowering learners with public speaking skills and knowledge about local government matters.
This year’s Mock Council featured learners from the following schools:
- Thistle Grove Combined School
- Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School
- Highveld Park High School
- Kiriyatswane Secondary School
- Osizweni Combined School
- Chief Ampie Secondary School
- Thandanani Primary School
- Mbalenhle Primary School
- Trichardsfontein Primary School
The learners deliberated on four key motions:
• The ruling party’s stance on an inquiry into corruption.
• The opposition’s call for urgent action on foreign nationals and crime.
• Abandoning the tender system in allocating funds for community services.
• A proposed law requiring foreign nationals to carry identification documents.
The discussions were marked by robust debate, with participants exchanging diverse views and ideas. The municipality noted that a wealth of useful information and perspectives was acquired from the learners, showcasing the value of engaging youth in governance issues.
