District confirms safe drinking water in eMbalenhle
The district mayor confirmed that Govan Mbeki Municipality was Blue Drop-compliant and received funds for water testing.
The Gert Sibande District Municipality mayor, Walter Mngomezulu, said their water quality laboratory continues to assist local municipalities in ensuring safe drinking water.
Mngomezulu said he was proud to confirm that the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) is Blue Drop-compliant, a recognition of excellent water management that gives investors confidence, while safeguarding the community’s health.
A Blue Drop-certified municipality has demonstrated excellent management of its drinking water systems, scoring 95% or more on criteria set by SA’s Department of Water and Sanitation.
This certification is awarded through an annual audit of a water supply system’s infrastructure, operations, treatment processes, monitoring and staff qualifications, ensuring compliance with the World Health Organisation’s Water Safety Planning concept.
Mngomezulu spoke during the district Integrated Development Plan consultation held at the Kgotso Hall in eMbalenhle on September 4.
“As the district, we have, in this financial year, dedicated R186 000 for the GMM water testing,” said Mngomezulu.
