Popular Bethal businessman dies in N17 accident

Edgar Kock’s family suspects he might have fallen into a diabetic coma at the time of the accident.

Family and friends were shocked to hear of the sudden death of well-known businessman Edgar Kock (66). Kock was involved in a fatal vehicle accident on October 15, near the Bethal tollgate from Trichardt.

He was returning from the OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg, after landing from a business trip to the Congo. His car collided head-on with a truck when he veered from the dual carriageway on which he was travelling.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. His family has requested an autopsy because they suspect Kock might have gone into a diabetic coma at the time of the accident.

Kock was born in Richmond on September 21, 1959 and has three brothers and one sister. He married Christine in 1988, and they had one daughter, Vicky.

They moved to Bethal in 1994, when he worked for OTK (Afgri). He left to open his mill, NMC Trading, in 1996. He was also known for his import and export as well as his courier services.

Kock was an ardent biker and hunter. He served in the army in Oudtshoorn and was a deacon and elder for the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk.

“He always wanted to help everybody. He was a perfectionist, well-known in the farming community, Bethal, Joburg, Zimbabwe, Botswana and the Congo,” said his wife.

The funeral arrangements were unfinalised at the time of going to print. Kock’s cremation will take place once the autopsy results are known. He leaves behind his wife, daughter, son-in-law, Steven du Toit, and grandson, Armand.
