Blood service needs your donations

Festive season affects blood donations.

As blood stock levels still remain low after the festive season, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) urged residents to donate blood.

The SANBS said a familiar seasonal pattern indicates a drop in blood collections during and immediately after the festive season.

Thandi Mosupye, SANBS’ senior manager for marketing, communication and brand, said it is essential to rebuild healthy blood stock levels early in the year to ensure continuous availability of blood products for patients.

“While many households return to a normal rhythm, thousands of patients countrywide will begin 2026 with a different hope. Their new year is not defined by goals or celebrations, but by the quiet wish for strength to return and for the simple, life-giving gift of blood to reach them in time. Their recovery, and in some cases survival, depends on the continued availability of donated blood,” said Mosupye.

Some reasons blood donations drop in January include increased travel during the holiday period, limited workplace and campus drives because many venues are closed, and disruption of regular donor routines due to family gatherings and other holiday activities.

“We remain grateful for every person who takes the time to donate blood. We encourage especially blood groups O and B to donate,” said Mosupye.

To donate, a person must be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh at least 50kg, be in good health, lead a low-risk lifestyle and consider their blood safe for transfusion.

Visit the donor centre in Secunda or Bethal to donate blood or contact them at 017 631 1652 or 017 647 5598.
