Well known pharmacist in Standerton retires after 45 years
Shashikant Govan, pharmacy owner and charitable community leader will be retiring and handing over the reigns of Nu-Centre Pharmacy to Ferdie Wyers on January 30.
Shashikant Govan (76) is retiring from Nu Centre Pharmacy on January 30, after 45 years of providing care to the ill and charity to those in need.
Govan was born in Standerton in 1949 and matriculated at Standerton Indian School, which later became Stanwest School, in 1968.
He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy in 1975 from the University of Durban-Westville and opened his pharmacy in November 1980.
“Over these past 45 years, I have established good relationships with my clients and an excellent pharmacy,” stated Govan.
He ran his business with passion and commitment and committed himself to the goal of serving the poor in his community. As a result, the pharmacy has offered affordable medication to domestic workers for most of Govan’s career.
He was an active member of the Standerton Hindu Society, teaching children Hindu scriptures every Sunday morning for 40 years. According to Govan, he still fosters close relationships with these children even after they have completed matric.

Govan has donated to several feeding schemes over the years, providing the poor with meals. He also gave school bags to the children of Stanwest School.
“Unfortunately, we could not continue with the food schemes due to the regulations linked to prepared food after Covid-19,” said Govan.
He explained that these feeding schemes provided over 200 community members and children with food each Thursday.
In his retirement, the Nu Centre Pharmacy spirit will live on through Ferdie Wyers.
“I believe selling it to Maximed Pharmacy is the best choice as they are equipped to set up clinics and provide services,” stated Govan.
He said he could not expand the pharmacy anymore at his age. Govan hopes that Wyers will provide quality healthcare to the poor population of Standerton and its various extensions.
After selling his home, Govan plans to move closer to his children and spend more time with his grandchildren. After 45 years of service to the community, Govan is grateful to each client and mentor who helped him make the pharmacy a success.
