Performing artist returns to eMbalenhle to nurture new talents

Vusi Mahlangu envisions transforming local townships into vibrant performing arts hubs that provide young people with positive alternatives to social challenges.

Vusi Mahlangu from eMbalenhle, popularly known as South African Michael Jackson, is making a powerful impact on the performing arts scene while uplifting young talent across the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

Renowned for his electrifying performances and dynamic stage presence, Mahlangu has embraced a mission to teach and nurture aspiring artists from local schools and townships. His nickname reflects not only his admiration for Michael Jackson but also his reputation as a captivating performer.

Mahlangu’s journey in the arts began at a young age. He attended Tholukwazi Primary School and later completed his matric at Sizwakele Secondary School. Over the years, he developed into a skilled performer with extensive experience in theatre production and stage performance.

His professional career includes working at prestigious institutions such as Artscape Theatre Centre and Baxter Theatre Centre, where he honed his craft and gained valuable industry exposure. Academically, Mahlangu is equally accomplished. He holds a dance teacher’s diploma specialising in arts and culture from the University of Cape Town.

He further obtained a postgraduate honours degree in Theatre Performance from UCT’s College of Music and was recognised as a Master’s fellow at the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies, where he continues to refine his expertise in performance, creative research, and theatre production.

In addition to his artistic achievements, Mahlangu earned a postgraduate certificate in education from the University of Limpopo, equipping him to effectively mentor and educate young performers.

Speaking about his passion, Mahlangu emphasised the importance of creative freedom and community support:

“Artists can reach their full creative potential when given the freedom and space to explore without being restricted. For local artists, the Stegman Theatre stands as the perfect platform to nurture and showcase their creativity.

“I always work in partnership with local schools and volunteer my time teaching learners about performance and theatre production because talent starts at school. That is where it can be explored and identified,” said Mahlangu.

Mahlangu envisions transforming local townships into vibrant performing arts hubs that provide young people with positive alternatives to social challenges.

“I want to turn our townships into performing arts centres to keep young people away from alcohol, drugs, and crime. Stegman Theatre needs to play a major role in developing those talents,” he added.

Through his dedication, Vusi Mahlangu continues to inspire a new generation of performers, proving that art can be a powerful tool for both personal growth and community development.
