Suspected cop shooter from eMbalenhle wants bail
Sifiso Nkosi faces murder and attempted murder charges after a shooting in Ext 8, eMbalenhle on the night of November 13, last year when the eMbalenhle police and emergency medical personnel found two seriously wounded victims next to a vehicle.
The Evander Magistrate’s Court on January 28 postponed Sifiso Nkosi’s bail hearing to February 4 for the confirmation of his alternative address.
Nkosi faces murder and attempted murder charges after a shooting in Ext 8, eMbalenhle on the night of November 13, last year when the eMbalenhle police and emergency medical personnel found two seriously wounded victims next to a vehicle.
The wounded man succumbed to his injuries in hospital on November 14, while the woman, a SAPS constable (32) stationed at eMbalenhle, was rushed to the hospital.
Nkosi testified through an affidavit read by his attorney in court, where he stated he would plead not guilty to the charges against him.
Nkosi claimed not to be a flight risk because he communicated with the police by phone about his whereabouts after the incident.
However, the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Melusi Mthombeni, disputed this.
When he took the witness stand, Mthombeni said Nkosi was lying under oath. The policeman told the court that before Nkosi’s arrest, he misled the police by claiming to be in Piet Retief while he was arrested in Vosloorus.
Mthombeni said private companies helped to locate Nkosi in Vosloorus and he then requested the Vosloorus police to assist.
Mthombeni also told the court Nkosi did not call an ambulance after the shooting. He said only community members near the scene called for help.
Mthombeni claimed that on their way back from Vosloorus, Nkosi told the police officer he would kill himself if he got the chance.
He also told the court on the day Nkosi was arrested, police found a firearm under his car seat. When the police checked it, they found it was the firearm Nkosi reported as being stolen in June last year.
Mthombeni further said the policewoman was in the intensive care unit in a Pretoria hospital for two weeks. She was since been discharged from the hospital.
According to Mthombeni, he almost completed the investigation with only one witness statement outstanding.
