Fakude family fears house in eMbalenhle will collapse
This family is in a serious danger though our municipality takes it easy.
The Fakude family at eMbalenhle’s Ext 18, known as Welas, are living in fear that their RDP house might collapse because of the sewage in and around their house.
Khelina Fakude and her grandchildren are scared they might lose their last home or even their lives.
Fakude showed Ridge Times all the rooms of their RDP house that have suffered damage either due to water or sewage.
The effluent outside spills into the house through the door.
“We always pray when we wake up, thanking God that we are still alive. Our problem began some years ago when our toilet stopped working. I am a pensioner and cannot afford plumbers.
“I reported the matter to my councillor with a belief that we will be assisted, but nothing has yet happened,” explained Fakude.
“This sewage is making us ill.”
The DA councillor, Anita Mkhwebane, tried to intervene but said her request for the family to be assisted was not taken seriously.
Mkhwebane claims to have reported the matter to the Govan Mbeki Municipality’s technical offices but was told vehicles were broken, rendering workers unable to attend to the problem.
“The lives of this granny and her grandchildren are in danger because there are cracks in the walls of the house and dangerous electricity cables that shock those who are using it.
“If GMM cannot repair the sewage problem, the family should be relocated,” said Mkhwebane.
The municipality said they are attending to all service delivery challenges, including that of the Fakude family when resources are available.
