Minister Senzo Mchunu of the Mpumalanga Department of Water and Sanitation visited Standerton on June 7 to assess the progress in addressing water and sanitation challenges.

The dignitaries who accompanied him included deputy ministers David Mahlobo and Judith Tshabalala, the mayor of the Gert Sibande District Municipality Walter Mngomezulu, mayor of the Lekwa Municipality Delani Louis

Thabethe, national and provincial officials from the department and special advisors.

During his visit to the area last July, Mchunu committed R350-million to assist Lekwa in dealing with the many water and sanitation challenges.

The department’s support was geared toward refurbishing the ageing infrastructure and operations and maintenance to improve the provision of services to communities.

The Standerton Water Treatment Works was the first on the agenda before travelling to Concor Sewerage Drainage for a site inspection.

The bulk outfall sewerage pipeline in Ext 8 was next on the list before a site inspection at the Rooikoppen booster pump station 3.
