Mayor says Govan Mbeki Municipality is filthy
Zuma said tourism in the GMM was in a crisis because of the limited number of hotels and guest houses. He said they only had six hotels and 26 guest houses.
The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s mayor told people at an economic and energy summit in Secunda that no places were as dirty as the municipal areas.
Mayor Nhlakanipho Zuma said the municipal spaces were full of garbage, and even the landfill sites were so full that there was no more space to dump.
“I travelled to China previously, and on my arrival, the average population for one city was 25 million, yet it was clean. When I returned to our municipality with less than 400 000 people, there was garbage everywhere,” said Zuma.
He said no one had grabbed the opportunity to do something productive with the waste.
Zuma also said tourism in the GMM was in a crisis because of the limited number of hotels and guest houses. He said the municipality only had six hotels and 26 guest houses.
“Our planning does not match our vision. As mayor, I want to revive the Secunda Jazz Festival. Where will all the visitors sleep? This is a disaster. People should know that when there is a crisis, endless opportunities exist,” concluded Zuma.
