Emergency exercise tests readiness of schools in Secunda
Schools participated in the emergency exercise conducted by Sasol and GMM Disaster Management on July 19.
An exercise was conducted by Sasol’s emergency management together with Govern Mbeki’s fire department and disaster management team on July 19.
For the purpose of the exercise, two railway tankers derailed and ruptured to release anhydrous ammonia gas.
Surveyors from Sasol and the GMM disaster management team put Highveld Park High School, Hoërskool Oosterland, Laerskool Kruinpark and Laerskool Goedehoop to the test to see how they respond in an emergency of a toxic gas release.
From the time of the alarm, educators had to ensure learners were stationed in their classrooms.
Educators had to do a roll call and ensure that all safety measures were taken by closing doors, windows and areas where toxic gasses could get in.
These four schools were influenced by the gas leak as per the location of the incident near the Secunda landfill site.
