New electricity meters in GMM come with many issues

Govan Mbeki Municipality insists there are no complaints

While residents are complaining about the new electricity meters Govan Mbeki Municipality installed, the municipality insists there have been no complaints.

One resident said apart from the fact that the electricity is now more expensive and he now has to pay R3 000 to R4 000 for electricity monthly where he used to pay R1 500, 15 units go missing at night when he sleeps.

“We switch off all the electrical appliances and the geyser when we sleep and the next morning when we wake up, there are 15 units less on our pre-paid meter,” said the resident.

Another resident said they cannot buy electricity online and have to drive to a number of filling stations to buy electricity.

The Ridge Times asked the spokesman of the municipality, Donald Green, for comment on this issue, but instead of answering the questions, he explained the process of installing the new meters.

Green said residents must grant the meter team access to their properties and provide the team with their details such as names, surnames, addresses, telephone numbers and other relevant information.

“The audit and installation of meters will help to improve the billing accuracy and identify faulty and malfunctioning meters,” said Green.

He later said after the Ridge Times asked him again, that the municipality has not received any formal complaints about the electricity meters and that they are not having any challenges with the new meters.
