LPBH speak to learners at Laerskool Kruinpark about the importance of taking care of their animals
Kids learn about animals’ rights to five freedoms.
Education is key for local animal activists and volunteers at Little Paws Big Hearts.
LPBH took to Laerskool Kruinpark on July 26 to explain to learners the importance of taking better care of their pet animals.
Sonja Kempen told learners that just like humans have human rights, so do animals.
Animals have five freedoms being:
• Freedom from hunger and thirst – access to fresh water and food
• Freedom from discomfort – shelter and comfort (kennel with blankets)
• Freedom from pain, injury, or disease – medical care and treatment
• Freedom to express normal behaviour – sufficient space, proper facilities, and company
• Freedom from fear and distress – ensuring proper living conditions and treatment to avoid suffering.

“When we are hungry, we eat food and when we are thirsty, we drink water. Just like us humans, our animals also need food and clean water every day,” said Sonja.
Louis Kempen and his four-legged furry friend Blacky entertained learners with a few tricks. Louis showed learners that it is just as important to interact with one’s animals.
“Many times your animal will not want to do what you want him to do, just like us humans. But playing with your animals is very important and they show their appreciation by wagging their tails,” said Louis.

Food, kennels, beds and blankets that were collected by learners were handed over to LPBH.
LPBH, which is an NPO, has over 900 animals they attend to every month. Most of these animals are located in townships and informal settlements.
