Water levels at Grootdraai Dam stand at 83.4%

Dams that recorded declines include Grootdraai Dam dropping from 84.6% to 83.4%, Nooitgedacht from 84.8% to 83.4%, Vygeboom from 100.7% to 100.4%, Jericho from 77.0% to 76.5%, Morgenstond from 97.9% to 97.7% and Heyshope from 97.8% to 97.7%.

Gert Sibande District water levels dropped below 90%.

According to the state of reservoirs report from the Department of Water and Sanitation, dated October 9, levels dropped from 90.1% to 89.6%.

The drop in water volumes in the district is in line with the situation in Mpumalanga, which shows that the average water levels in the listed dams dropped from 93.4% to 92.8%.

Levels also continued to drop in the water management areas (WMA) as the Olifants dropped from 86.4% to 85.8% and the Inkomati-Usuthu from 94.1% to 93.6%.

In the other districts, levels also dropped with Ehlanzeni from 95.5% to 94.6% and Nkangala dropping from 97.0% to 96.5%.

Westoe is the only dam that remained stable recording an unchanged 58.0%, with the rest recording declines in water volumes.

The department encouraged the public to continue using water wisely and sparingly, taking into consideration that water conservation is key to water security, especially as South Africa is a water-scarce country.
