MEC promises to investigate injuries to young mother from eMzinoni

Mahlangu also said they were pleased by Manzini commitment to institute an investigation on what happened to Kalake.

The Mpumalanga MEC for Health, Sasekane Manzini, has finally visited Princess Kalake’s family in eMzinoni.

This young woman is in a coma in the Bethal Hospital after giving birth in April. Manzini visited the family on October 31.

According to Kalake’s aunt, Sesi Mahlangu, the Mayisela family wanted the hospital management to explain what had happened to their daughter.

Mahlangu said the MEC’s visit to the family brings hope as she promised to intervene in Kalake’s case.

Manzini also joined the family in a visit to the 20-year-old Kalake in hospital.

“The family is grateful for the support from Manzini. We will do as she said to us before she left.

“Manzini said we had to work together to assist Princess in her condition. That is what we wanted from the hospital management,” said Mahlangu.

She also said they were pleased by Manzini’s commitment to investigate what had happened to Kalake.

The family wants to know how and why Kalake sustained brain damage while giving birth.

By the time the family could get information about the delivery, they already transferred Kalake to Ermelo Hospital. Mahlangu was handed Kalake’s baby boy and told Kalake’s head was swelling.

“They repeatedly told us that God is with us, but we did not know why.”

Kalake’s son is named Sibongokuhle, which (loosely translated) means ‘thanks to what is good’.

Mahlangu said they were reeling with shock about the terrible news and told the hospital management that they decided to go to Ermelo to see if Kalake was fine.

When the family arrived at the Ermelo Hospital, they heard Kalake was admitted to the ICU. The nurses asked them to wait so that they could bath Kalake before the family checked on her.

Kalake has since been sent back to the Bethal Hospital in June where she is in the surgical ward for women.

According to Mahlangu, they promised the family she would be transferred to Pretoria, but this has not yet happened.

She claims Kalake sustained a new head injury.

When they confronted the hospital about it, they said the hospital was not responsible for the injury.

Mahlangu said the family only wanted the truth, and even if it was a mistake by the hospital, the family is pledging their cooperation.

Mahlangu said the family members are angry because no one is taking responsibility. They are also worried that the six-month-old Sibongokuhle will never know his mother.
