Bronkies Our Town cleans around the taxi rank
During the clean-up, they also cleared several illegal building rubble dumpsites.
Team-up to Clean-up Bronkhorstspruit started their clean-up on November 3, mainly in and around the taxi rank.
The most important part of the day was the building of new and strengthening of older relationships between the community members.
“We intend to take small steps and with every project ahead intend to build meaningful relationships that will benefit everyone who has to live and work in Bronkhorstspruit,” explained Vasti Mills, Team-up to Clean-up organiser.
Director Tintswalo Nomsa Makamu of the metro police joined the clean-up with her officials and addressed some matters.
Employees from the City of Tshwane’s mayoral office joined in. They identified serious problems at the stream below Sazar, opposite Sweet Corner.
“The challenge is to find the appointed officials from SANRAL, who are responsible for the maintenance of the R104 from Lanham to Balmoral,” said Makamu.
They had to address the deterioration of the road at Sweet Corner, and the blockage of the natural flow of water in the wetland because of rubble and also debris which is the result of illegal dumping over the years.
“The incorporation of Bronkhorstspruit into the municipality of Tshwane has led to the deterioration of infrastructure and services,” said Mills.
One of these services the community has on their wish list is the reinstatement and the appointment of a full-time local bylaw unit to bring dumping offenders to justice.
According to Mills, the community’s hard work and the supply of Bobcats, telescopic loaders and several tipper trucks out of the Bronkhorstspruit business sector will go to waste because illegal dumping is not addressed.
Mills said, “The much-dreaded part of the R104 (Balmoral road) was also addressed on November 3, when the representative of the mayor’s office took the time to listen to my complaints and drove there with me as a representative of the community that I love and live in.”
During the clean-up, they also cleared several illegal building rubble dumpsites. Two local businesses sent their employees and a Bobcat and tipper truck.

“Members of the public who are in the position to regularly witness the illegal dumpers, got the task now to keep the cleaned-out areas clean,” said Mills.
“I have seen enough used condoms and men urinating in the street in just a few hours to make me green in the face,” said Mills.
“The city has erected vendor stalls on Lanham Street opposite SPAR that need refurbishing.
“The city is inviting the informal traders to the streets, but they should really also look into ablution facilities for these people,” said Mills.
“Addressing the problem will contribute to the long-term success and appreciation of the efforts of every volunteer and business involved, which is truly needed to make the clean-ups sustainable,” said Mills.
Arengo Plastics, the municipal team, Kapanga, Metro Police, RSP Processing, AFGRI and Bronkhorstspruit Fietswinkel assisted in the latest clean-up in Bronkhorstspruit.
Makamu requested that some representatives from the Bronkies Our Town volunteering community meet with them to discuss future projects, as well as a deep clean.
A deep clean will involve tree felling, litter pickup, reopening the stream and redirecting the water flow in the Sweet Corner stream.
