Keep our children safe by asking the right questions

Theresa Gray from Aqua Antics swim school in Secunda says selecting a swim school for your child is a major decision.

Summer is here and keeping children out of water is almost an impossible task. Being water-safe saves lives, and it is therefore important for children to learn how to swim.

Theresa Gray from Aqua Antics swim school in Secunda says selecting a swim school for your child is a major decision.

“The question is if the swim teacher is currently registered with Swimming South Africa. This is a quick and easy ‘yes or no’ answer. Don’t assume any swimming teacher is registered.”

Gray says it is always better for the swim school to be registered, as the swim school and its teachers have the prerequisite qualifications, which have been submitted and approved.

Every teacher must have:
• A current and clear police clearance
• Current first aid and CPR
• Safeguarding and child protection workshops
• Sworn to abide by the Swimming South Africa Code of Conduct
• Ongoing continuous professional development

It is a swim teacher’s responsibility to be accredited and registered. The swim school owner needs to ensure the teachers appointed are registered.

“Parents, keep our children safe by asking the right questions.”
