Hlalefo was electrocuted by a falling electricity cable while playing in the street next to his home four years ago.

The Zimeleni Disabled Association has, together with the family of Hlalefo Mapeshoane (15) registered the Hlafelo Foundation.

This is to help pay for a personal tutor and special medical treatment.

Hlalefo was electrocuted by a falling electricity cable while playing in the street next to his home four years ago.
He was only 11 years old when he was paralysed.

He could not return to his school, Thorisong Primary School in eMbalenhle. He was a Grade Five learner, but due to his injuries, was forced to stay at home because he was unable to walk.

Hlalefo Mapeshoane(15) from eMbalenhle was paralysed by electricity when he was 11 years old.

Hlalefo is now using a wheelchair for his mobility. He cannot use his arms and has to rely on others to push his wheelchair.

Nthabiseng Mapeshoane, Hlalefa’s mother, told the newspaper she never thought her child would be disabled after the incident.

She said if he wants to go to the toilet, she has to ask her other children to push him because his hands since the accident are not functioning.

She said since her child is disabled, his dream of getting an education has diminished. As a parent, she feels pain when she looks at Hlalefa.

According to Doctor Mayisela the Zimeleni chairperson, the Department of Basic Education has finalised the registration for Hlalefa’s home schooling, the remaining challenge is who will be paying for the tutor and Hlalefa’s education.

Mayisela said the trust is now available to raise funds for his education and other necessities such as his medical needs.

“We are appealing to businesses and all community members across the Govan Mbeki Municipality to lend a helping hand by donating whatever amount of money to the trust account for Hlalefa’s education.

“The boy’s future now depends on community assistance. The department told the family they don’t do homeschooling but have a list of teachers specialising in homeschooling.

The Zimeleni Disabled Association handed over the Hlalefo Mapeshoane Trust certificate to him and his family.

“When the family asked who was paying that particular teacher, the department said they only provide a tutor and it is the family’s responsibility to pay him or her.”

Mayisela said the trust is controlled by both the family and their organisation.

Johannes Mapeshoane, Hlalefo’s father said the family will appreciate it if Hlalefo can also get an artificial left hand that will enable him to do simple things.

Those who want to assist can contact Doctor Mayisela on 076 196 9659 or Johannes Mapeshoane on 071 258 7613.

After Hlalefa’s accident, the Govan Mbeki Municipality told reporters they investigated the cause, but the outcome is still not known.
