Woes over alleged unpaid salaries at Daybreak continues

Employees claim they have only been paid half of their salaries for the month of May. June salaries were apparently still outstanding.

A protest was reported this morning (July, 2) at the Daybreak Foods Abattoir situated on the R50 near Delmas.

According to a source on the scene rocks were placed on the road, vehicles were thrown with rocks and all traffic was diverted.

This comes after recent turmoil at Daybreak over serious financial problems.

Disgruntled employees claim they have only been paid half of their salaries for the month of May. June salaries were apparently still outstanding.

As previously reported, Daybreak employees further allege that Daybreak Foods is avoiding formal retrenchments and they are therefore refrained from accessing UIF benefits.

Daybreak, owned by the Public Investment Corporation (PIC), was placed under voluntary business rescue on May 20, following a resolution by its board.

A court order was also issued after thousands of chickens died of hunger and subsequently turned to cannibalism.

At 14:15 the road was declared open again, but rocks were still present on the road surface – police were also still on scene.

Road users were cautioned to drive carefully and be on the lookout for debris as well as a possible up flair by protestors.
