Performing arts group in eMbalenhle calls for the alternative space
The organisation wants to combat illegal dumping.
Absalom Nkabinde, theatre practitioner and chairperson and artistic director of the Indingo Committed Theatre Network (IC Theatre Network), is calling for the creation of alternative art spaces in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
The organisation has set its sights on establishing the first independent theatre in eMbalenhle as part of its broader initiative to combat the growing challenge of illegal dumping.
Nkabinde said they came up with the idea after the team noticed the neglect of several buildings in the area had turned it into hotspots for drugs and substance abuse, underscoring the urgent need for community-centred intervention.

He explained that securing such buildings through the municipality had been slow and complex, leading the organisation to shift its focus to illegal dump sites instead.
“In response, the organisation is launching Buciko Public Spaces, a project aimed at transforming illegal dumped areas into public art spaces. Unlike traditional projects, this initiative requires only municipal authorisation, not a lease, and it promises to reduce illegal dumping while creating vibrant creative hubs for the community,” said Nkabinde.
He added that the IC Theatre Network intends to collaborate with other art organisations across the municipality to strengthen the local creative sector rather than work in isolation.

The team hopes the executive mayor will support the project, noting that it aligns with the municipality’s ongoing clean-up efforts.
“By converting dumping sites into art spaces, the project will keep the environment clean while promoting local talent and cultural expression.
“This initiative shows how community-driven art can reclaim neglected spaces, turning them into hubs for creativity, social engagement, and cultural growth,” Nkabinde said.
