The Mpumalanga MEC for Education, Lindi Masina, and Premier Mandla Ndlovu released the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda on January 13.
Masina and Ndlovu also handed tokens of appreciation to top achievers in recognition of the Class of 2025’s academic excellence.
The overall outstanding top achiever in Mpumalanga is Luyanda Ndhlozi from Elangwane Secondary School in the Dr Pixley Ka Isaka Seme Local Municipality (Volksrust) in the Gert Sibande District.
She scooped a number of awards, including a new car, and was also honoured by the Minister of Education as the national top achiever among Quintile 1 schools, a remarkable achievement that brought pride to the province.
Masina said the province had aimed for a 90% pass rate but achieved 80.08%.
“What impressed us is that there is no circuit in the province that performed below 70%. Of 582 schools, 56 achieved a 100% pass rate, 379 performed between 80% and 99%, and 93 achieved above 70%,” said Masina.
Masina added that her department will intensify support for no-fee schools to ensure sustainable improvement, revealing that 48 no-fee schools performed below the 70% pass rate threshold.
“According to our department, any performance below 80% is considered poor and requires our urgent attention,” she said.
Sizwakele Secondary School in eMbalenhle was named the most consistently improving school in the province, performing above 80% since 2022, and recording a 12% improvement to reach a 91.9% pass rate in 2025.
To improve school environments, Masina announced the Randza Xikolo Xhawena (Love Your School) initiative. The campaign was launched in collaboration with the departments of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Land Affairs, as well as communities, to ensure schools are safe for learners and teachers.
Masina congratulated Thandanani Primary School in eMzinoni for winning the 2025 Cleanest School Competition.
She said that on January 6, the department launched its Back-to-School campaign to ensure that all necessary resources are provided so that teaching and learning resume smoothly on the first day of school’s reopening.
