GMM arrests man tampering with infrastructure
Following the arrest, the suspect allegedly identified several locations where he had illegally bridged electricity, including Exts 4, 9 and 11.
Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) enforcement officers arrested a man in Ext 25 on January 27, for tampering with electricity infrastructure.
Donald Green, the GMM media liaison and content developer, said the arrest followed reports of illegal electricity connections.
According to Green, the suspect allegedly identified several locations where he had illegally bridged electricity, including Exts 4, 9 and 11.
“Tampering with electrical infrastructure is a criminal offence. Illegal electricity connections are the primary cause of transformer failures, cable damage and prolonged unplanned power outages, which negatively affect paying customers. Illegal connections pose safety risks to communities, including electrocution and fires,” said Green.
The GMM urged residents to remain vigilant and warned that electricity bridging and tampering with infrastructure will not be tolerated.
“The municipality intensified its crackdown on those who sabotage essential services. Anyone bypassing electricity meters, bridging the power supply or tampering with kiosks and poles will face arrest and criminal prosecution. Residents with illegal connections face heavy fines,” said Green.
“We call upon the community to work with us to protect infrastructure and ensure reliable service delivery for all,” said Green.
