Driver of a bakkie dies in head-on collision with truck near Leandra

The road will be closed for some time while the police forensic team is on the scene.

A man died and two other people sustained serious injuries when a bakkie and a coal truck collided head-on this morning (March 12) on the R50 between Leandra and Standerton.

The driver of the bakkie died on impact. ER24 ambulance services transported the seriously injured truck driver and his passenger to hospital.

The accident happened about 10km from Leandra at approximately 06:30.

It is believed that the truck had to swerve to avoid a pile of tar obstructing part of the lane towards Standerton. The tar, used in road repairs, had been dumped on the edge of the road and was spilling onto the road surface.

Emergency responders on the scene said coal is currently scattered all over the road, and other motorists are cautioned to drive carefully or use an alternative route.

The road will be closed for some time while the police forensic team is on the scene.
