Bethal Road bridge in Trichardt is under construction

Reconstruction of the Bethal Road bridge began on March 19. Motorists are advised to continue using the N17 highway as the road is temporarily closed.

Govan Mbeki Municipality’s (GMM) Executive Mayor, Nhlakanipho Zuma, conducted an oversight visit to the Old Bethal Road bridge site on March 19, to mark the commencement of permanent reconstruction.

The bridge suffered significant structural failure in January 2025 following heavy rainfall.

After completing necessary engineering assessments and procurement processes, GMM is transitioning from temporary gravel repairs to a robust, long-term technical solution.

As a key component of the municipality’s road rehabilitation programme, the project aims to restore structural integrity and ensure the safety of both motorists and pedestrians.

The affected section of Old Bethal Road remains strictly closed to all traffic for the duration of construction. Motorists are advised to continue using the N17 highway or designated gravel bypasses.

Residents should expect increased heavy machinery and personnel on-site. Adhere to all temporary signage and flagger instructions to ensure public safety.

The municipality extends its gratitude to the community and local businesses for their continued patience as this essential infrastructure is restored.
