Lucas keeps kids off the streets
Lucas grapples for wrestling medal in the South African Cadet and Senior Championships.
eMBALENHLE – Lucas Ngwenya (26) believes wrestling can keep young boys out of troubles and make them competitive people who are respected and admired by locals.
He trains a group of boys who come from disadvantaged homes at the Sasol Club in the week.
Lucas said wrestling is a demanding sport and it takes a lot of discipline and hard work.
“Though people think wrestling is a contact sport, it teaches you not to fight on the street and to behave.
“It gives you discipline and self-control.”
Lucas has been a wrestler since he was a teenager and took part in several championships.
He attributes his wrestling skills to Shaun Fivaz, a wrestler from Witbank.
Lucas was among the team of wrestlers from Mpumalanga who took part in the South African Cadet and Senior Championships in Pretoria on 4 and 5 July.
He competed in the Greco Roman and Free Style senior division in the 57kg to 61kg and won a bronze medal.
Lucas encourages young people to overcome all the odds and to be role models in their communities.
