Special athletes get good treatment
Special Olympics South African help Secunda kids.
SECUNDA – More than 200 special athletes received a unique service specially catered for their needs by qualified clinical technicians during the first Healthy Athletes screening for the year at the Rondekerk on Saturday, 14 February.
Altogether 10 special schools attended this health initiative by Special Olympics South Africa.
These screenings aimed at ensuring that the athletes perform to the best of their ability in sports training and at events and also to ensure that they are in good health.
“We had an amazing response from volunteers who helped with the process,” said Ms Zanele Ngwenya, marketing and communications officer of Special Olympics South Africa.
The volunteers helped the clinical specialists in five different aspects that included dentistry, optometry, podiatry, physiotherapy and general medical care.
“These screenings have a positive impact on the athletes and boost their confidence during sports events.
“They know now that they can see better or run better because of the care they received at the screening.
“The screenings have a high impact on the parents as well, because instead of seeing five different specialists at a certain amount you get to see them all at once for free.
“It brings a great change in people’s lives.”
