Karatekas return with three medals

The Kimura Shukakai Standerton Karate Club returned home with three medals from the Northern Region SA Championships held at Wits University from 15 to 16 May.

The Kimura Shukakai Standerton Karate Club returned home with three medals from the Northern Region SA Championships held at Wits University from 15 to 16 May.

Jolene Burger received a silver medal and JT du Preez and Jordan Burger both bronze medals.

“The Kimura Shukakai International Karate-Do has split the national championships into two regions, north and south, due to the long distances that the clubs must travel to compete,” Wynand Ferreira, sensei of the Standerton club, said.

“The competition was tough and I am proud, not only for those that received medals, but for all my club members that participated.”

Altogether 11 members of the club competed in the championships in the junior divisions in the kata and kumite divisions.

Kata means form and depicts sequences of movements that are put together in an overall pattern that must be memorised.

Kata training includes the elements of direction, technique, speed, power and rhythm.

The analysis of kata can lead to many discoveries for practical self-defense, since hidden within the different forms are many useful sequences of movements that can be directly applied to different scenarios.

Kumite means partner work or sparring.

Basic partner work introduces pre-arranged training drills to help get used to using different punches, kicks, blocks and strikes. Through these set training drills one is able to directly apply defensive movements and counters against actual attacks.

Kimura Shukokai International was formed in 1995 after the death of Soke Shigeru Kimura, 10th Dan.

All of the chief instructors were training with Master Kimura for many years prior to his death.

People studying karate at colour belt level strive to become a black belt. Once this is achieved there are 10 different levels of black belt called Dan.

Sensei Ferreira received his black belt in 1992 and is currently a 3rd Dan, but expects to qualify for his 4th Dan some time next year.

He began teaching the art of karate in Standerton in 2004.

The club practices at the Bosman Hall at Laerskool Standerton every Monday and Wednesday evening.

Practice for the juniors is from 5pm to 6pm and for the seniors from 6pm to 7pm.
