Youngsters compete for spot in Gert Sibande Union Chess team

Sparticus Chess Club will host rated tournaments monthly where young chess players compete for a spot in the Gert Sibande Union Chess team.

Sparticus Chess Club held its first rated chess tournament at Ukhozi Lodge on 3 June as a newly registered chess club in Secunda.

Juane van Zyl took the lead in the boys’ division, followed by Lie-Chaen Miller in second place and Henri Viljoen in third place.

Payal Morar won the girls’ division.

Anjali Morar came second and Evan Malan third.

Sparticus Chess Club, now affiliated with Gert Sibande Chess Union, will host rated chess tournaments every first Saturday of the month.

These will count as qualifiers for the selection of the Gert Sibande Union Chess team that will compete in the South African Junior Chess Championship in January next year.

Social chess meetings are held every second Friday of the month from 6pm to 8pm at the Vaal University of Technology in Secunda.

Chess players then play informal chess and participate in the in-house ranking competition.
