Siboniso is a passionate Secunda sportsman and law student
"My addictions began right after matric in 2009, the same year that I lost my mother and our home."
SECUNDA – Siboniso Dube knew that he could run faster and further than his peers at a young age, but never took it serious until the “storm of life” hit him.
Born and bred in KwaZulu-Natal, he was very involved in nearly every sporting code in school, including basketball, soccer, cricket and hand-ball.
However his upbringing forced him to neglect his passion and love for sport. He is the eldest child of an unprivileged family.
Siboniso recalled how his mother, a single parent, struggled to raise him and his siblings and that he felt obligated to help her.
Because of the situation at home, he could not pay attention to his sports talents until 2017 when he had been addicted to marijuana and alcohol for eight years.
“
“I was hurt and traumatised and I lost my the zeal for life and I wanted to quit.
“However in 2017, after introspection, I decided it was time to rescue myself from the dark hole I was in.”
Siboniso decided to take a break from his law degree at Unisa and began to read biographies and books for personal development and to uplift himself spiritually and psychologically.
He rekindled his love for sport and running.
“I began to use the Nike application on my cell phone to keep a record of, among others, my running times.
“I also took the decision to stop smoking and drinking on 15 January 2017
“God has been good, I ran the first race in my life in March 2017, namely the Kosmos 3-in-1 marathon and achieved a time of about two hours for the 21km and 50 minutes for the 10km.”
