Highveld Secondary School beats Qambekile Primary rugby teams

Team is slowly improving, but with limited resources and funding it will be a big mountain to climb.

Qambekile Primary School was defeated by Highveld Secondary School when the schools played rugby matches against each other at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium on Wednesday, 9 May.

The local girls’ rugby team went down 55-0, while the boys succumbed to a 35-0 defeat.

Township rugby is on the rise in Wesselton, although Qambekile Primary is the only school that is pushing the rugby programme.

The school’s team, coached by Mr Bongani Fakude, is slowly improving, but with limited resources and funding, it will be big mountain to climb.

The boys’ team is in need of a rugby kit. They share jerseys with the senior players.

However, Mr Fakude is optimistic that more youths will take to the programme as it is a growing sport.

“Once we get all the equipment that we need, the quality of the game and my players will improve,” he said.
