First time trial series comes to an end

Thia Viviers lead the women’s road bicycle races and eventually won trophy for the women’s overall time trial cyclist in the road bike discipline

SECUNDA – Adriaan Lambrechts and Werner Luddick are the overall winners of Sasol Cycling Club’s first time trial series.

This series contained five-time trials that were held on every last Sunday of the month with the first race beginning in February.

Cyclists competed in either a 20km road race or a 15km mountain bike race.

Riders were allowed to send in their STRAVA times if they were unable to attend the race on that specific day.

Luddick was the favourite from the start in the mountain bike series.

He won all the individual races at an average of just over 26 minutes.

Jaco Nortjé was a front-runner in the road bike race after the second time trial, but Lambrechts caught up and overtook him.

He won the last three time trial races with an average of 28 minutes.

Thia Viviers led the women’s road bicycle races and eventually won the trophy for the women’s overall time trial cyclist in the road bike discipline.

The club awarded them with floating trophies at the club’s annual general meeting held at the Sasol Secunda Club on Thursday night, 28 June.

The entry fees charged for each time trial was doubled by the club to present it to the Highveld SPCA. The amount raised was R2 280.

Mr Desmond Matthee, club chairman, said the next series will probably only be held next year.

The club is now focused on several events taking place in the area, such as the Trap om Genade endurance race taking place on 28 June, the Privaatskool Hoëveldrif and the Tour de Nova in August, and the Kleinbegin MTB race in Leandra in September.
