Cricketers back on field in October

Although the cricket season will be kicking off soon, unfortunately due to Covid-19, it will be without any spectators.

Cricket enthusiasts will be please to know that the 2021 -2022 season will be batting off on the first weekend of October.

Last year’s cricket season was dampened by the start of the current Covid-19 pandemic.

“Never in our wildest dreams we would have thought that our lives would change so much in just a matter of months,” said Mr Ignus Koekemoer, chairman for SSCC.

Mr Koekemoer said that there is not much to report on the past year, however, they are still grateful that they managed to play some warm-up matches before the season was eventually called off.

“It was not ideal but we made the best out of a very tough situation. I thank each member for their patience, commitment and most importantly, for staying safe.”

Although the cricket season will be kicking off soon, unfortunately, due to Covid-19, it will be without any spectators.

There are a few changes this season that will see the winners of the Gert Sibande Region take on the winners of the Nkangala Region to determine a Highveld Champion.

Winners of the Highveld will play a final against the winners of the Lowveld.

“This will ensure strength versus strength in all the knockout games,” said Mr Koekemoer.

The Mpumalanga Cricket Union is now included in the second division of the national competitions.

Mr Koekemoer said this will see some top cricketers take part in our club leagues and it also opens up opportunities for our local-based players to represent our province at a professional level.

First team captain, Colin van Staden, went for trials for the Mpumalanga Colts during the offseason.

“The Colts team were selected out of the top amateur players within the province and it is an achievement in its own.”

There has also been the election and re-election of the committee at this year’s AGM.

“As a club, we like to be an example for other clubs to follow. This cannot be achieved without hard work and dedication. I am looking forward to the next few years,” said Mr Koekemoer.

He thanked Sasol for making their venue and field available during these trying times.

“We are proud to represent such a great brand and we will continue to represent you in a manner that will make you proud.

“We would like to wish all our fellow clubs well for this upcoming season and we at Sasol Secunda Cricket Club look forward to again compete against you this season,” Mr Koekemoer concluded.
