Stallions Hockey Club hosts friendly hockey match in Secunda

All interested players are welcome to join this new club.

The newly founded Stallions Hockey Club hosted a friendly match at Curro Secunda on Saturday, July 16.

Stallions Hockey Club was founded early this year by a group of young men who has a love for the sport.

“When I was in the Eastern Cape, I saw how club hockey had grown there. The youth are exposed to different levels and environments of hockey where the standards are of higher intensity.

“I never had the chance to compete at such a level in school. Once you leave school, that is where the hockey stops unless one goes to varsity,” said Emmanuel Phiri, who is a founder of the Stallions Club.

He said that not everyone has the opportunity to go to varsity and that because of this, he saw the need for outdoor hockey to be a sport that everyone can play and not just as a sport one plays at school.

“Our vision is to take hockey to another level and not just an extra-mural activity that is done at school. We want Secunda hockey to be on the map of South African hockey,” said Phiri.

The mission of the club is to help improve the quality of hockey overall in Secunda and Mpumalanga.

“Limits have been put on local players which only allow them to be exposed to one level of hockey throughout high school, we want to remove those limits and set high standards and create a high level of hockey players.

“We also want to expose them to a higher level of training, to grow talents and abilities and to be recognised on a higher playing level,” said Phiri.

Currently, the club has three teams consisting of a women’s team and men’s teams.

The club invites all interested people to go and play, even if one is not a member of the club.

A hockey tournament will also be held in September at Curro Secunda.
