Hijackers meet their match in high speed chase on N12

In an exchange of fire, a suspect was wounded in the leg and another suspect was arrested.

A high-speed pursuit led to the death of a suspected hijacker in Delmas and the arrest of two others.

Tracker Connect Company was conducting patrols on the N12 at the Kusile off-ramp at about 20:00 on October 12.

They noticed a white Toyota double cab bakkie being accompanied by a white BMW travelling on the N12.

According to a media statement released by Capt Carla Hartley, corporate communication officer for Delmas Police, the members of Tracker Connect became suspicious as the vehicles were travelling at high speed.

The Flying Squad from Middelburg was in the vicinity and they joined the high-speed pursuit.

Backup was requested from the Delmas Police.

The bakkie took the R42 Delmas / Bronkhorstspruit on-ramp and headed towards Delmas.

The suspect, however, lost control over the bakkie at the four-way crossing at McCains Food and it rolled.

The Police found the bakkie without anyone in it.

The police then searched the area and found a badly injured man.

It appeared that the 27-year-old suspect was flung from the vehicle when it left the R42-road.

Upon the arrival of paramedics on the scene, the suspect was declared dead.

According to Capt Hartley, a 9mm pistol and a jamming device were found on the scene.

In the meantime, the white BMW took the R50 Bapsfontein off-ramp.

Members of Tracker Connect, Blue Hawk Tactical, the Middelburg and Delmas Police and various other security stakeholders caught up with the BMW near the Etwatwa turn-off after which the suspects began shooting.

In an exchange of fire, a suspect was wounded in the leg and another suspect was arrested. Another 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene.

Inside the BMW, the victim of a hijacking was found unharmed and safe.

According to the victim, who wishes to stay anonymous, he stopped in his driveway at his home in Vosman, Witbank to relieve himself when the hijackers grabbed him.

They forced him into the BMW and one of the suspects took his bakkie.

Capt Hartley thanked all parties involved, including the Sundra Bulldogs Neighbourhood Watch, for their positive contribution toward the successful operation.
