Standerton SAPS speak up on GBV

The campaign was conducted in collaboration with the Standerton Victim Empowerment Centre and the Sisterhood Advocates Group 5.

Members of Standerton SAPS held an outreach and awareness campaign in the town’s central business district on March 3.

The purpose of the outreach was to conduct a community awareness campaign focusing on gender-based violence (GBV), sexual offences and breaking the silence, and drug and substance abuse awareness.

According to Sergeant Johannes Ndaba from the Standerton Police Station, the campaign aimed to educate the community on preventative measures, reporting procedures, and available support services.

The campaign was conducted in collaboration with the Standerton Victim Empowerment Centre and the Sisterhood Advocates Group 5.

The team engaged with the people in the town on this day and distributed pamphlets on domestic violence, sexual harassment, GBV, and drug and substance abuse.

They also conversed with senior citizens waiting in line and encouraged the community to use the contact numbers and support services listed in the distributed pamphlets.

“Interviews were also conducted with men following community concerns alleging that older men were involved in molestation cases. These engagements aimed to address allegations, gather information, and reinforce awareness regarding sexual offences and legal consequences,” explained Ndaba.

He said the community responded positively to the initiative. Members were receptive to the information shared and expressed appreciation for the awareness campaign. The engagement created an opportunity for open discussion and encouraged reporting of abuse-related incidents and criminal activities.

The collaboration between SAPS and community stakeholders strengthened partnerships and promoted community safety.
