Tavern shooting in eMbalenhle: Double murder case transferred to Regional Court

The case against Musonwabo Skweza (35) was postponed to May 25.

The Evander Magistrate’s Court has transferred the case of Musonwabo Skweza (35), who is facing double murder charges, to the Regional Court following a brief court appearance on March 2.

Skweza is accused of fatally shooting two men at a tavern in eMbalenhle on January 1. The victims were identified as Siyabonga Fortune Hlapo (25) and Ratile Motloung (24).

During his second court appearance in January, Skweza abandoned his bail application.

According to police, he was traced and arrested between Leandra and Devon through a coordinated operation involving members from Crime Intelligence, eMbalenhle Detective Services, Visible Policing, the Secunda Flying Squad, and members from Kinross SAPS.

Authorities reported that Skweza was allegedly hitchhiking to Gauteng when he was believed to have been given a lift in a private vehicle before his arrest.

During the arrest, police recovered a firearm with ammunition and two magazines. The firearm’s serial number had been filed off, and investigators believe it may be the weapon used in the fatal shooting.

Skweza now faces multiple charges, including double murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Skweza will first appear in the Evander Regional Court on May 25.
