Classical music fills the streets of Wakkerstroom

The WMF Marimba Ensemble Community Project is now in its10th year.

The streets of Wakkerstroom came alive with the sounds of classical music, colour and visitors attending the 15th annual Wakkerstroom Music Festival from March 20 to 22.

The residents played a part in hosting the event, with local women dolling up the place in colourful crochet patches and local guesthouses opening up for the performances.

At its heart, the festival remains what it has always been: a community event.

The WMF Marimba Ensemble Community Project, now in its tenth year, opens the festival on Friday afternoon. Students from Wakkerstroom, Country College, and Volksrust High School perform with the confidence and joy of musicians who know they belong on a stage.

It is the sound of the festival’s deepest conviction: that classical music is for everyone, and that it grows when it is shared.
