Van der Merwe and Russell strike Gold Rush glory at Walker Park
Jaco van der Merwe is this year’s men’s champion with an overall score of 82 points, while M-J Russell secured the women’s title with 79 points.
Golfers from across the region put their skills to the test as Walker Park Golf Club hosted its annual Gold Rush Tournament from June 12 to 15, continuing a tradition that has been a highlight on the local golfing calendar for more than 20 years.
The four-day competition attracted enthusiastic players who battled it out on the fairways and greens for daily honours and the coveted overall titles.
Day one saw Dorian van Staden claim the men’s division with an impressive 42 points, while Ella Smit topped the women’s standings with 38 points.
The competition remained fierce on day two as Jaco van der Merwe matched the opening day’s winning score of 42 points to take the men’s honours.
M-J Russell produced a consistent performance to win the women’s division on 40 points.

Day three belonged to Dorian Van Staden, who once again demonstrated his form by finishing first in the men’s division with 39 points.
Lienkie Osterhuizen secured victory in the women’s division to add her name to the list of daily winners.
The tournament concluded on day four with Amos Khumalo winning the men’s division on 37 points, while Dorothy Pieterse claimed the women’s honours with 38 points. After four days of competitive golf, consistency proved to be the deciding factor.

Having been hosted for more than two decades, the Gold Rush Tournament remains one of Walker Park Golf Club’s signature events, bringing together golfers of all abilities in a celebration of sportsmanship, competition and community spirit.
